Justice Ginsberg: I Wasn't 100% Sober During SOTU

I don't know why this should matter off-hand - it should - but given what President Obama's done over the past 6 years, I'd be half-in-the-bag too at the SOTU:
There is a reason Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known as the Notorious R.B.G. in certain Internet circles. Ginsburg admitted Thursday night that she was not “100 percent sober” during President Obama’s State of the Union. No, she wasn’t playing the unofficial SotU drinking game, she just over-indulged during the Supreme Court’s pregame dinner party.
“The audience for the most part is awake because they are bobbing up and down and we sit there, stone faced,” Ginsburg said during a panel at George Washington University. “But we’re not, at least I was not, 100 percent sober.”
“I vowed this year – just sparkling water, stay away from the wine – but in the end, the dinner was so delicious it needed wine.” (Chicago Sun-Times)
FWIW, I really hope she's 100% sober when deciding Supreme Court cases....

South African University Reject Student Council's Call To Expel Jewish Students

...remind me again whether anti-Semitism still exists...oh, wait: it still does...
The vice chancellor of Durban University of Technology  (DUT) in South Africa on Wednesday rejected the student council’s call to expel Jewish students who do not support the Palestinian cause.
University Vice Chancellor Professor Ahmed Bawa released a statement calling the demand “outrageous, preposterous and a deep violation of our National Constitution and every human rights principle.” He added, “No student at DUT will be discriminated against on the basis of religion, race, gender, political affiliation or sexual orientation.” Bawa also told South Africa’s Daily News that the request was “totally unacceptable.” (Algemeiner)
Take a guess as to which group was calling for it....
The demand to expel all Jewish students, especially those who do not support the Palestinian agenda, was made by the university’s Students Representative Council and Progressive Youth Alliance. (Algemeiner)
...they don't call progressives the Deluded Left for nothing...someone should remind them that should - God forbid - the Islamonazis get their way, guess which group - among many - would get the proverbial shank from them? That's right...the Deluded Left.

Every measure of prudence, therefore, ought to be assumed for the eventual total extirpation of slavery from the United States....I have, throughout my whole life, held the practice of slavery in...abhorrence. - John Adams, letter to Evans — 1819

5 Years Of The Solar Dynamics Observatory

Quoting: Today marks five years in space for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which provides incredibly detailed images of the whole sun 24 hours a day. Capturing an image more than once per second, SDO has provided an unprecedentedly clear picture of how massive explosions on the sun grow and erupt.

...as much as I like to slag on government at times, it is nice to see that sometimes there's some really cool things that they do...such as study the solar system and the sun, for instance.

Health Officials Sound Alarm Over "Measles Parties"

The stupid must really burn white hot in the Golden State at times, huh?
Some parents in California are reportedly considering throwing “measles parties” — social gatherings where unvaccinated children can intentionally come into contact with infected kids — in an effort to build up their children’s natural resistance to the infectious disease.
Julie Schiffman, a San Francisco mother who has chosen not to vaccinate her two children, told KQED’s California Report that she was recently approached by a friend who invited her to a measles party. The friend offered to arrange a play date with a child who currently has measles. Schiffman said she turned her down.
“I would want that to be something they decide on their own, when they’re older and are more capable of assessing the risks and dangers,” she said. “When they’re teenagers, I’d say, ‘okay, you have a choice, you can get vaccinated or you can get the measles, what would you rather?’” (Public Health Watch)
Okay...repeat after me...WTF?!?
It shocks me at times to think that, given the overall safety and efficacy of vaccines nowadays in preventing childhood diseases such as measles and polio, parents such as Ms. Schiffman would rather expose their children to these childhood diseases in this manner than go through the time and effort to get their vaccinate their children, especially given how contagious diseases such as the measles are.

What's it gonna' take to knock some sense into these people....how 'bout charging them with child abuse for starters? Maybe we should start there....

It is one thing to be subordinate to the laws, and another [for the Executive] to be dependent on the legislative body. The first comports with, the last violates, the fundamental principles of good government; and, whatever may be the forms of the Constitution, unites all power in the same hands. - Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 71 — 1788

NBC Suspends "Nightly News" Anchor Brian Williams For 6 Months

....have fun on your vacation, ya' lying sack of ****!
NBC has suspended “Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams for six months without pay for telling a false story about being in a helicopter that was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade while covering the war in Iraq, the network said Tuesday.
Lester Holt, the anchor of NBC’s weekend edition of “Nightly News” will take over as the primary anchor of the program. Mr. Holt has been filling in since Monday, when Mr. Williams took himself off the air amid NBC’s investigation into the matter.
“By his actions, Brian has jeopardized the trust millions of Americans place in NBC News,” NBCUniversal Chief Executive Steve Burke said in a memo to staff. He said what Mr. Williams did was “inexcusable.” Mr. Burke, who has a close relationship with Mr. Williams, added that the anchor “deserves a second chance and we are rooting for him.”(Wall Street Journal)
That one quote above is epic, the 'by his actions' one...doesn't that assume that people still trust the lamestream media? My question here is this: why aren't more heads rolling over this? By most accounts, Brian Williams has told this embellishment for over a decade, which means either he's had a lot of people covering for him...or the higher-ups at NBC Universal simply don't care, which should also say something for the duplicitous nature of the major networks and their associated chattering classes.

The rich, the well-born, and the able, acquire and influence among the people that will soon be too much for simple honesty and plain sense, in a house of representatives. The most illustrious of them must, therefore, be separated from the mass, and placed by themselves in a senate; this is, to all honest and useful intents, an ostracism. - John Adams, A Defense of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America, vol 1 — 1787

Alabama Begins Issuing Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

....and Alabama makes 37!
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court denied the state's request to extend a hold on a federal judge's earlier ruling.
Judge Alan King of Jefferson County Probate Court in Birmingham issued the first license to two women, making Alabama the 37th state where gays legally can wed. He then proceeded to issue several more licenses.
"It is great that we were able to be part of history," said Dee Bush, who has been with her partner Laura Bush for seven years. They have five children between them. After receiving her license, she and partner walked outside to a park where a minister was performing wedding ceremonies to cheers from crowds. (USA Today)
...and to think, there were those who kept screaming that the world would come to an end if we extended marriage equality to same-sex couples...well, I keep looking around and the world's still with it, so I guess once again they were wrong...especially this motherfucker who thought it'd be cute to attempt to defy a federal judge's order:
The high court issued a brief order early Monday rejecting a request by Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange to postpone the implementation of a federal judge’s ruling allowing same-sex marriages, which was set to begin Monday. U.S. District Judge Callie Granade last month ruled the state’s marriage ban was unconstitutional.
While the nation’s highest court won’t stand in the way of marriages in Alabama, the chief justice of the state’s Supreme Court, Roy Moore , tried to do so. On Sunday night, he ordered that probate judges and state employees not issue or recognize same-sex marriage licenses. (Wall Street Journal)
With all due respect, Judge Moore, fuck-you-very-much, you reprobate bigot!

Former UNC Basketball Coach Dies At 84

Even though, to be quite honest, I never really cared for His Royal Arrogance when he coached the Tar Heels, even I'm shedding a few manly tears at the news of his passing:
Former North Carolina coach Dean Smith, who had a Hall of Fame basketball career, was beloved by his players and became one of the nation’s most respected sports figures, died Saturday evening in Chapel Hill, according to a statement released by the university. Smith, who had been in declining health the past few years, was 83.
“Coach Dean Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children,” the Smith family said in a statement. “We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you.” (Charlotte Observer)
Say whatever you want about Dean Smith, but the man was class exemplified. Requiescat in pace, Mr. Smith...rest in peace, sir.
