Founder's Quote, 27 March 2015

The proposed Constitution, so far from implying an abolition of the State governments, makes them constituent parts of the national sovereignty, by allowing them a direct representation in the Senate, and leaves in their possession certain exclusive and very important portions of sovereign power. This fully corresponds, in every rational import of the terms, with the idea of a federal government. - Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 9 — 1787

IG Report: DEA Agents Partied In Colombia With Cartel-Supplied Hookers

...there's a hookers-and-blow joke somewhere here, but damn if I see it:
Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration reportedly had "sex parties" with prostitutes hired by drug cartels in Colombia, according to a new inspector general report released by the Justice Department on Thursday.
In addition, Colombian police officers allegedly provided "protection for the DEA agents' weapons and property during the parties," the report states. Ten DEA agents later admitted attending the parties, and some of the agents received suspensions of two to 10 days.(Politico via. Ace of Spades)
Now, try wrapping your heads around that for thirty seconds....go on, I'll wait. *adds deadpan* ...ain't government service just grand?

What Happy Pigs & Bigoted Weasels Have In Common

Quoting: Last week, Senator James Lankford (Oklahoma) and Representative Randy Forbes (Virginia) jumped on the fact that Chipotle suspended a pork supplier for failing to provide proper animal care. Then they twisted that news through a tangle of logic until it was sly justification for businesses to refuse service to LGBTs.

What do happy pigs have to do with discrimination? Not much. But with "Religious Freedom" laws popping up all around the country, we're going to see more weasely false-equivalencies appearing in the news.

Let's unpack why a company's decision to to run its business according to a code of ethics DOES NOT mean that business owners can discriminate against anyone their religion does not approve of.

...remind me again why we need religious liberty right to discriminate based on religious beliefs laws again?

I am persuaded that a firm union is as necessary to perpetuate our liberties as it is to make us respectable; and experience will probably prove that the National Government will be as natural a guardian of our freedom as the State Legislatures. - Alexander Hamilton, speech to the New York Ratifying Convention — 1788

Duck Dynasty's Phil Robertson Imagines Vivid Rape & Murder Scenario For Atheist Family what sick fucking world does Phil Robertson live in?
"Duck Dynasty" star and conservative icon Phil Robertson told a gruesome, vivid story on Friday about the hypothetical rape and murder of a family to illustrate the perils of atheism, according to audio surfaced by Right Wing Watch.
The website reported that Robertson made the remarks during a speech at a Florida prayer breakfast that was later broadcast by the conservative radio program TruNews. (Talking Points Memo)
...and what specifically did he say? This:
“I’ll make a bet with you,” Robertson said. “Two guys break into an atheist’s home. He has a little atheist wife and two little atheist daughters. Two guys break into his home and tie him up in a chair and gag him. And then they take his two daughters in front of him and rape both of them and then shoot them and they take his wife and then decapitate her head off in front of him. And then they can look at him and say, ‘Isn’t it great that I don’t have to worry about being judged? Isn’t it great that there’s nothing wrong with this? There’s no right or wrong, now is it dude?’”
Robertson kept going: “Then you take a sharp knife and take his manhood and hold it in front of him and say, ‘Wouldn’t it be something if this [sic] was something wrong with this? But you’re the one who says there is no God, there’s no right, there’s no wrong, so we’re just having fun. We’re sick in the head, have a nice day.’”
“If it happened to them,” Robertson continued, “they probably would say, ‘something about this just ain’t right.” (Right Wing Watch) quote the words of Joseph Welch: Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

Army Deserter To Be Charged

There's an awful lot of egg on an awful lot of people's faces over what has become a grade-A fiasco...
The U.S. military has charged Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl with one count each of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy, officials announced Wednesday afternoon. The latter count could carry a penalty of life in prison. (CNN via. American Thinker)
...and some of that egg, regrettably enough, is also on mine as well, for, like a lot of Americans at the time, I honestly felt that the Obama Administration had made the right decision....God, was I stupid as hell for thinking that or what?

Excuse me a second...

Indiana Governor "Looking Forward" To Signing Anti-LGBT Religious Freedom Bill Into Law

...and to think, I was so looking forward to watching the Indianapolis 500 come Memorial Day Weekend...well, if this bill becomes law, then its' "Fuck you very much, Indiana!"
INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana governor Mike Pence said Monday he is looking forward to signing a religious freedom bill that LGBT rights groups say is among the most sweeping “license to discriminate” bills introduced this year in more than a dozen state legislatures.
The measure, approved Monday in the state House by a vote of 63-31, would prohibit any state laws that “substantially burden” a person’s ability to follow his or her religious beliefs and has a definition of a “person” that includes religious institutions, businesses and associations.
Opponents say the bill provides widespread legal cover for discrimination against LGBT people. The bill needs another vote of approval from the Senate before heading to Pence, who released this statement following Monday’s vote:
“The legislation, SB 101, is about respecting and reassuring Hoosiers that their religious freedoms are intact. I strongly support the legislation and applaud the members of the General Assembly for their work on this important issue. I look forward to signing the bill when it reaches my desk.” (LGBTQ Nation)'d think social conservatives would learn by now that these bills don't do anything but give people a legal out to discriminate against LGBT people...well, here's hoping the free market gives the Hoosier State a big old bite in the ass.

The foundation on which all [constitutions] are built is the natural equality of man, the denial of every preeminence but that annexed to legal office, and particularly the denial of a preeminence by birth. - Thomas Jefferson, letter to George Washington, 1784

Ted Cruz Becomes First Candidate To Declare 2016 Presidential Run

I'm of two minds on the news of Sen. Ted Cruz's decision today to formally announce his intent to run for president in 2016...on the one hand, his decision marks the start of the 2016 campaign season and should he do well in the primary process, could help bring more social conservatives into the GOP. On the other hand, given Cruz's intense opposition to same-sex marriage and other gay-related issues, all I'll say for now is this: if Ted Cruz is the Republican nominee in 2016, I'll support him because I frankly do not want to see any Democrats anywhere near 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue...but only if he is the nominee; at the moment, my candidate of choice w/in the expected GOP field is Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

Of course, given that we're still 8-9 months away from the first acts of this campaign dance, anything can happen...

Are Republicans Squandering Their Congressional Majorities?

Let me think about it....yes:
Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., says Republican leaders are wasting historic majorities in Congress by surrendering on critical issues like immigration and driving deep wedges in the party by collaborating more with Democrats than conservatives on key votes. “We are talking about historical vote margins in the House and Senate,” he said. “Republicans have done better than we have in probably 80-90 years. We have immediately started squandering away that victory.”
Huelskamp said the biggest disappointments are in fully funding what he considers to be President Obama’s unconstitutional amnesty and in failing to stop Washington’s desire to tax more and spend more. He said the problem started back in December with the “cromnibus” bill, even before the GOP gained control of the U.S. Senate.
“Both Speaker John Boehner and soon-to-be leader Mitch McConnell backed away and seem more intent on working with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi than they are conservatives,” Huelskamp said. (World Net Daily)
Its' one thing when the GOP can't get things done by themselves - which in theory, they should be able to do without any trouble from the Dems' due to their majorities in Congress - yet things have to be screwed up for Republicans, especially in the House, to have to depend on the minority side to get anything done....hello, Speaker Boehner: remember the Hastert Rule? And with all due respect to commentators who say that the Speaker should represent the whole House rather than his party....who died and put you political prognosticators in charge of Washington?

Laws for the liberal education of the youth, especially of the lower class of the people, are so extremely wise and useful, that, to a humane and generous mind, no expense for this purpose would be thought extravagant. - John Adams, Thoughts on Government — 1776
